Workshop 'Science, Narrative, and Stanisław Lem's Fiasco'

Date: 4.-7. June 2015
Location: Astronomical Institute, Bamberg

Description

This four-day workshop will introduce its participants to the interdisciplinary field of literature and science through an intensive immersion into the text of Stanisław Lem’s masterful science-fiction novel 'Fiasco', a cautionary tale about attempted contact with an extraterrestrial civilization. Along with a short syllabus of secondary readings, the workshop will explore Stanisław Lem as science-fiction author, science fiction as a literary genre, Fiasco‘s modes of narrative construction, and Fiasco‘s presentations of physics, cybernetics, information theory, technology, medicine, biology, evolution, anthropology, mythology, sociology, game theory, and systems theory.

Please contact Mike Sinding for registration!

The workshop is also listed in UnivIS (see here).

Leaders: Professor Bruce Clarke, Paul Whitfield Horn Professor of Literature and Science, Texas Tech University, with Professor Dirk Vanderbeke, Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena.
